DisCamino : Pro bono projects

In addition to our commitment to education, at Possible we are proud of our commitment to society. This year we did not want to miss our appointment and do our bit. Want to know more? We’ll tell you about it below…

Importance of supporting society

A company should not be alien to the society in which it is formed. The same company lives in that community and is forged with its members, its spaces, and its investments.

Possible is aware of the importance of supporting to improve the life of society. To give back as much as possible what is received and above all to support those who have it more difficult.

As a company, it is not always easy to find a way to collaborate with society so that the company can put at the service of society the knowledge and experience it has so that it is useful for users and citizens. There are always things to do but it is not always within our reach, knowledge, or ability. We must remember that helping altruistically requires an investment that for many companies is unfeasible. All of these factors determine how, when, and to what extent it is possible to help.

This year we have come up with one of the most wonderful ways possible to do our bit to create a better world.

DISCAMINO.ORG

The story of DisCamino is extraordinary. It all starts in 2009 when a deaf-blind boy from Vigo, Gerardo, made his first Camino de Santiago pedaling on a donated Copilot. Without knowing it in advance, this young man would be the first of many to complete this centennial pilgrimage.

In this natural way, DisCamino was born, an organization that helps people with problems to fulfill their dream of making the Pilgrimage Way to Santiago de Compostela. His work has become so important and has been so well received that he has received awards and nominations from various institutions. In addition, DisCamino participated in the documentary El desorden de los sentidos.

How did we find DisCamino?

DisCamino came to Possible through a team member whose brother has cerebral palsy from birth that prevents him from performing activities as common as walking or eating. This organization was a new hope and a challenge to overcome for the young man. It is this same member of Possible who declares that for all the boys who make up the association, it has been a means of integration. It has allowed them to meet goals they never thought they could complete. As well as, it has allowed everyone to feel proud and fulfilled.

Do you show motivation?

Daily training shifts are organized in pairs between a co-pilot (person with a disability) and a pilot (volunteer). Currently, the number of members of the association amounts to more than a hundred, so the coordination of the outings is an extremely difficult job that, until now, was done by the president of the association, Javier Pitillas Torra. The manual system requires that those who wish to train must send a message to the president, he has to write them all down and square shifts taking into account the limitations and needs of each co-pilot and the limited number of bicycles available to the association.

How have we collaborated?

For our part, we wanted to help this organization and all its members by applying our knowledge in technology. Through the use of back-end and front-end technologies such as Python, React, or Carbon Design System, we have developed a platform aimed at optimizing the task of organizing the daily training of co-pilots and pilots of the association. Among its many functionalities are: manage the list of available bikes, allow users to log in and out, management of workouts by an Administrator, allow users to sign up for a workout, and much more.

In the future?

In the future, we hope to continue helping society by carrying out projects that, although small, make a big difference for those to whom they are addressed.
